On a quest to discover new local Connecticut beers and breweries (we support local), I discovered Front Porch Brewing. Only a few minutes away from a hard cider tasting at New England Cider, add Front Porch Brewing to your must-visit list if you’re in Wallingford, Connecticut. As you might suspect (with an incredible name like that), back in the day, the front porch was where “the brewing magic” happened.
Front Porch Brewing is an up-and-coming brewpub (launched November 3rd, 2017) whose owners have been collectively brewing for 10 years. The brewery is located in a warehouse which has now been converted into a garage-style brewery and taproom.
As a small batch-brewery, what makes Front Porch Brewing unique is its ability to experiment and share a variety of different concepts. In other words, this isn’t the kind of brewery where you’ll find the same five beers on rotation. Instead, Front Porch Brewing enthusiastically and consistently introduces new beers. They aren’t afraid to be unconventional; constructing and deconstructing styles and mixing flavors which they call “reverse methologocal creatures”.
Front Porch Brewing
At the taproom, there are seven Front Porch beers on tap including sours, stouts, sour stouts and IPAs. All beers are priced between $5-$6 and served in 12 oz. glasses (unless noted).
The beers are always changing (having a chalkboard menu comes in handy here) so check out their updated tap list at BeerMenus.
If craft beer isn’t your thing, no worries, you can order cider, wine, spirits, whiskey or soda. And if you’re craving something salty, there’s a variety of snacks to choose from.
But Front Porch Brewing doesn’t only want to offer an experimental drinking experience. They want their brewery to be the local hangout spot.
The Hangout Spot
With that being said, Front Porch Brewing has board games, arcade games and an N64 with classic games like Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Smash Bros. They even have a Super Nintendo (SNES)!
In fact, just last week they hosted their first ever gaming tournament, the “Super Smash Bros Tournament”!
In sync with their casual style, the bar’s picket fence decor, picnic tables, moody lighting and couch added to the ambiance. There’s also an interesting art piece hanging on the wall with one chair for each of the four owners.
Don’t forget to check out the bathroom for a few giggles!
To get a feel for the variety offered, we ordered a flight of four and followed up with a glass of our favorites.
Our flight included: “Show Me What You Got”, “Finger Guns”, “Parti-Gal #2”, and “Girlie Beer”.
While my favorite was “Finger Guns” for its refreshing citrus taste and acidity, “Girlie Beer” came in at a close second.
Although I’m not usually into stouts, this Imperial Stout with 11.4% ABV was easy to drink and delicious!
Overall, Front Porch Brewing is a fantastic place for a casual drinking experience. I would especially recommend a visit if you’re looking to experience something extraordinary.
Front Porch Brewing beers are innovative, risky and flavorful which is the perfect recipe for a beer tasting. Not to mention that the owners (one of which was serving drinks behind the bar) are knowledgeable, warm and welcoming.
Until next time – cheers!
