As a new couple, date nights are extremely important. It’s how we create new memories together, discover interesting things to do in town, and see each other crack under pressure, I say so lovingly of course. But seriously, regardless of where you are in your relationship, a fun night out with your significant other can be good for the soul and your relationship. That’s exactly why my best friend and I planned a double date at Muse Paintbar in Norwalk.
Offering couples’ art on Saturdays, at Muse Paintbar – Norwalk, couples can paint together or paint solo. There are even family days where the entire family can paint together. Kids paint as young as 7 years old.
Founded in 2012, Muse Paintbar offers paint sessions at 26 locations across the country which include three studios right here in Connecticut – West Hartford, Glastonbury, and Norwalk.
Muse Paintbar – Norwalk
Paint and Sip
When we arrived at Muse in Norwalk, the studio was bright and inviting. Colorful paintings decorated the exposed brick walls. The atmosphere was laid-back and intimate perfect for cozying up with your paint date or socializing with other couples.
The Norwalk studio accommodates up to 45 painters.
There’s also a fantastic gallery which features awe-inspiring paintings by Muse artists. My favorites were portraits of Snoop Dog and Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
After settling in, we grabbed an apron and sat in our assigned seats.
On the table, we had everything we needed to create our aurora masterpiece which included a wooden easel, a white canvas, five paintbrushes of various sizes, a platter of acrylic paint and a pint filled with water for washing out our dirty brushes.
Couples Art – Turquoise Aurora Painting
At Muse Paintbar, come as you are. That means regardless of your artistic ability or skill level, you’ll get to create a painting that you can proudly take home. Muse’s instructors break things down into manageable tasks and they help you every step of the way. You’ll learn a variety of brush stroke techniques and some terminology like “tinting” (when you add white to another color).
Throughout the night, our instructor Gabby showed the class how to create a natural aurora scene by starting with a dark sky.
Gabby was down-to-earth and made the painting experience incredibly simple and fun. She was open to answering all of our questions and repeated instructions frequently. I especially loved how she emphasized creating a “Tiffany Blue” hue by blending blue and white.
Melissa ran the bar in the back and offered a helping hand to those who needed a little nudge in the right direction. She also took a ton of photos that were later featured on the Muse Paintbar – Norwalk Facebook page.
During our breaks, Gabby played classics from The Black Eyed Peas and bands like The All-American Rejects. Some couples started to sing along which is yet another reason why paint nite is a fun and engaging activity for couples.
During our paint session, we loved that we could embellish however we wanted. Like when we decided to sign our paintings at the beginning of the class instead of at the end. Or when we went a little overboard with the white crests in the waves.
But what about if you mess up?
There’s no such thing as messing up when you can easily paint over it!
Food and Drinks
If you’re feeling hungry or thirsty, you’ll be happy to know that you can buy appetizers and drinks throughout the paint session. Choose from “dips ‘n things” and “hot stuff” like hummus platters, chips, and salsa/guacamole, flatbread, soft pretzels or sweet desserts. There are also over 20 types of beers and wines to choose from as well as sangria, soda, and juice.
If you follow dietary restrictions, items on the menu are labeled vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free.
BYOB is not allowed.
All in all, we had so much fun that we hardly believed our session was over – two hours flew by so fast!
After putting our aprons and paintbrushes away, Gabby and Melissa took care of the rest.
While wrapping up and scanning the room, I was amazed to see how everyone’s paintings turned out. Even though we all painted the same winter scene, our paintings came out a little different; each unique to the painter’s individual style.
So what’s the best way to do paint night with your significant other?
Leave your expectations behind and just have fun with it! Grab an apron, indulge in a glass of red and unleash your creativity.
Our turquoise aurora painting now hangs in my office and continues to remind me of how much fun I had painting side by side with my beloved muse.
What’s your favorite date night activity?
This is a collaborative post with Muse Paintbar, of course, all opinions are my own.
